In July, The Domino Sugar Refinery in Brooklyn, NY will be replaced by luxury waterfront residential buildings. Before its demolition long lines are formed to view Kara Walker’s “A Subtlety”, a temporary installation of sculptures crafted from 80 tons of sugar, an interesting commentary on the historical sugar trade.
The centerpiece is a giant sphinx-like sculpture made from 330 blocks of styrofoam coated in 40 tons of sugar.
Although the gigantic piece is alluring, the decrepid remains of the factory are equally enthralling. The distinct smells of sugar and molasses envelope as you enter the cavernous space.
